Parking is provided a short distance below the summit, at Balsam Lake. Large recreational vehicles are asked to park in the first parking lot near the cabin, just before the lake. To protect the fragile flower meadows at the summit, the road between Balsam and Heather Lakes is closed to most traffic. A shuttle bus is provided at peak times to provide an easy lift between the lakes. Alternatively, you can walk up the road or hike the Upper Summit Trail. Adding on Jade Lake will increase the hike length by 8km and also a significant amount of additional elevation so start early for this one. It’s only 1km long – so it isn’t really an exertion – and pleasant enough through the forest, but not worth prioritising above the trails from the upper summit if you are limited in time or energy. The Upper Summit Trail is essentially a connector trail that joins the lower car park to the upper summit area if you don’t want to wait for a shuttle bus or walk on the road. Revelstoke is perfectly situated for a break on a road trip between Vancouver and Banff, and there is plenty to do to keep you busy for a couple of days. The truth is that the majority of Revelstoke hikes are more like leg stretchers, but there is one longer hike that is well worth doing.

The Stoke Climb is started after a paid gondola lift access pass which carries you all the way to the trailhead at 1700m. Here you begin your way up the gentle but steady machine built Stoke Climb. The reward of the climbing up that 7kms and 517m is sitting at 2200m overlooking Revelstoke and the entire valley below. Frisby Ridge is 8km south of town on the west side of the Columbia River. Then a 6km drive up logging roads you find yourself at the trailhead.
Some helicopter tours offer hiking options and a chance to get out and explore the alpine. Revelstoke Mountain Resort has the highest vertical drop of any ski resort in North America, at 1,713m. In the summer, you can ride their gondolas up the side of Mount Mackenzie for great views and lift-accessed hiking. Be sure to check out the Glacier View and Revelstoke View lookouts near the top of the Revelation Gondola. The Revelstoke View lookout has an especially great view of the town.
The Tim Hortons in Revelstoke is a magnet for… sad to say… chaos. It is the main stop on the highway when passing by the community. Big rigs and trucks pulling big trailers and bus tours are all fighting for space amongst the gas pumps of a Shell station. Add mixed in amongst the chaos are more trucks towing boats, cyclists and everyday cars and motorcycles adding to the confusion.
Study up the guidebook and get your national park pass, winter permit, and parking permit from Parks Canada. A nice option is to base up at the Asulkan Hut for a few nights. Once in the alpine you discover a wildly different terrain than Frisby. Talus slopes, waterfalls, patches of snow and steep slopes are the setting for the trail. Winding its way over and around the many creeks and prominences the trail challenges your skill and fitness.
With my first two days behind me, soaking up the MTB culture of town and shaking off the cobwebs it was time to experience what I had heard so much about. I was ready for the ride that I afterwards found myself repeatedly saying, “This is a BC Top 10 MTB Must Do”. It was time for Frisby Ridge and my escape into alpine mountain bike riding heaven.
